PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATORS’ USE OF THE INTERVIEW PROCESS AS A PREDICTOR OF QUALITY PRINCIPAL CANDIDATES: A QUANTITATIVE SURVEY APPROACH

The hiring of qualified staff that believe in the vision and mission of the school in which they have applied can be seen as the most important and significant decision a school district can make. Poor hiring decisions can affect a school’s culture and climate for many years, as well as significantly impact the academic prowess of its students. Inadequate interview practices poorly vet job candidates resulting in a lack of performance in newly hired administrators, leaving schools vulnerable to mediocre teaching and low student achievement. The research looked to recognize the changing role of the school principal and to determine what leadership skills and abilities are important to a school when hiring a new principal. The Professional Standards for Educational Leadership were the principles used to measure leadership skills, while the research sought to determine if the PSEL had any influence on the selected candidate satisfaction. The survey instrument was a 28-question survey. Twenty-seven questions were multiple choice using a Likert scale, and one question was an optional, free response question. The sample population was personnel administrators from across New York State. The statistical analysis of the collected data was entered into SPSS for the purpose of conducting a multiple regression. In an effort to determine if there was a significant relationship between the importance of the PSEL to a district, and the deliberate assessment of a candidate’s capacity to meet the PSEL during the interview, on the district’s satisfaction with the candidate. Spearman Rho Correlations between the variables were conducted. Personnel administrators found the standards extremely or very important and moderately assessed the standards during the interview process, however, no relationship was evident to their satisfaction with the successful candidate. This suggests that the importance and use of the Professional Standards for Educational Leadership during the interview process does not predict a district’s ultimate satisfaction with their principal candidate of choice

The Bright and Dark Sides of Technostress: An Empirical Study of Healthcare Workers

    Get PDF
Healthcare workers are reporting instances of psychological stress induced by healthcare information technology. IS researchers have established a valuable research program on which to study psychological technostress in healthcare workers. This research stream considers technostress a dark side of technology associated with negative perceptions and harmful effects. However, extant literature suggests that psychological stress can be perceived positively (as eustress) and negatively (as distress), and can have positive and negative impacts on individuals and organizations. The objective of this manuscript is to present the first part of a three-part multi-method and cross-cultural research program on technostress in healthcare workers. The program reframes technostress in terms of techno-eustress and techno-distress, and reveals its “bright sides” and “dark sides”. This paper presents the results of an analysis of a survey distributed to nurses employed in four USA hospitals. We also discuss the contributions of our paper and our plans for the future

Managing Information Technology for Strategic Flexibility and Agility: Rethinking Conceptual Models, Architecture, Development, and Governance

The concepts of strategic flexibility and strategic agility have received much attention recently as businesses face increasingly uncertainandcompetitivemarkets(Hittetal.1998;Sanchez1997). However, formanyfirms, existingITassetsandcapabilities pose a serious impediment to strategic agility. Some firms that have successfully implemented enterprise systems are now finding that these systems can be inflexible and difficult to change. Other recent work illustrates that specific choices about IT can enable or constrain a firm’s strategic abilities to respond to changes in the competitive marketplace (Sambamurthy 2000; Weill et al. 2002). If indeed strategic flexibility and agility have become critical imperatives for businesses, then a critical question for IS researchers and practitioners is what can be done to better position IT to enable strategic agility? This panel session proposes to examine the implications of the strategic agility and flexibility imperatives for the IS discipline from four critical perspectives: conceptual models of IS and strategic enablement, IT architecture, IS development, and IT governance. Our rationale is that these comprise four key domains that impact IT use within business organizations, specifically how we think about the role of IT in business, how we design and manage core IT infrastructure and architecture, how new IS applications are developed and implemented, and the allocation of roles and responsibilities for managing IT resources and capabilities. The panelists will argue that significant rethinking and new insights are required to guide IS practice in satisfying the demands for business flexibility and agility, and that future research is needed to identify ways in which IT can be managed to provide these outcomes

Inventing and Implementing LLCs at an HBCU in One Year: Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) have proven to be a successful high impact practice at institutions across the nation. Norfolk State University (NSU), a Historically Black University, recently established a formal LLC program as a part of the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Through a strong partnership with Academic and Student Affairs, NSU implemented and invented LLCs all within one academic year. Similar to the collaborative nature of LLCs, this paper examines the lessons learned from various perspectives (LLC director, teaching dean, faculty liaison, faculty) during the rapid inventing and implementing of LLCs
